Thing 14; Delicious

I have the Nebraska access site tagged with the following:  nebraska_access, database.  Everybody has their own way of tagging, so I do what is most comfortable with me.  One thing I don't like is putting an underline or period if you have more than one word for your tag.

This is a tool I will have accessible for my students starting this fall on my school library website, that way students can go in and see some of the things I have tagged and give me suggestions as well.  I like the fact that you can go in and look at others bookmarks as well.  I am following some of school librarian friends and libraries as well.

Thing 13: Twitter

Did you like micro-blogging? How could you libraries use Twitter? How could you use Twitter?

Micro-blogging takes some time to get used to.  Being limited on what you want to say can be difficult at times.  However once you get used to doing it, it's really easy.

Libraries could use Twitter to let patrons know if they have overdue books, upcoming events, new books, and special promotions.  For my purpose I could also use it for my technology tidbits with the HS students.  Plus you can connect with other librarians and see what they are doing as well. I need to start using it more.

Thing 11: Technology

Some quick thoughts on technology:

At the end of the school year, I used some money the school received from a magazine sales for the library to purchase a Mobi and a set of 16 clickers to use in the elementary library.  Thoughts: new technology-scary, but I need to take the time to figure out how to create answer keys, have the worksheets ready, but need to go back and label things appropriately.  Really looking forward to using these in the classroom.  I can have results immediately-saving hours of grading, I cut back on the amount of paper I use which the administration will be happy about, and the students are the real winners here, being able to use technology that was not readily available to them.

How far has technology come and where exactly are we going?  I attended a data retreat with teachers and administrators from my school and other schools within our educational service unit and was grateful that we had laptops there to access information that we needed to compile data about our school.  But with all the apps on the cell phones, kindles, ipads, being able to store just about anything on the Internet gives me reason to be concerned.  Don't get me wrong here, I think it's great and I wonder if I could go back 10 years and live now without a cell phone like we did back then...don't think I could do it.  It's amazing what we can do, but how secure are we in all reality?  Who's to say that someone hacks into your flickr account and deletes all your pictures after you clean you personal hard drive to make more space.  Students today are more tech savvy than ever before and I think we need to be cautious about putting our full trust into all technology.

Earlier this week I attended the Heartland School Library Conference in Omaha and being able to review the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner with Cassandra Barnett, President of AASL (American Association of School Libraries) on Monday made me think about how I need to be implementing this in my library classroom, especially with Standard 2 Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.  I'm trying that this year the clickers in the classroom and hopefully as the year goes on tie in the standards to my lesson plans.  Yesterday, Pam Berger spent the day talking and showing us different Web 2.0 tools that should be used in classrooms.  I hope to show students in both buildings some of the things I learned, incorporating it in Palmyra with my technology tidbits and giving students the opportunity to work with the technology.  And the elementary kids need it too, so I'm working on incorporating some aspects as well.

Thing 9: More Flickr fun

I can see where this could be used as a fun item on library websites!

Thing 8: Flickr

This was a photo taken on the 4th of July 2008 with my daughter.
Celebrating the 4th by you.

Thing 7: Finding Feeds

Create a blog post about your experience. Don't know what to blog about?
  • Here some questions to think about ...
  • Which method of finding feeds did you find easiest to use?
  • Which Search tool was the easiest for you?
  • What kind of useful feeds did you find in your travels?
  • Or what kind of unusual ones did you find?
  • What other tools or ways did you find to locate newsfeeds?
I found that using a webiste url was the easiest, it takes a little more time to do, but some of the sites I subscribed to using the icon as well.

I found many different library feeds that I feel I can use to help myself.

Nothing I subscribed to was unusual, the only one I put in that category is the Shifted Librarian-really enjoy it!

Like I said before, finding sites that had the icon is the easiest way to know if you can subscribe or not.

Thing 6: Make life "really simple" with RSS & a newsreader

Don’t know what to blog about? Think about these questions:
  • What do you like about RSS and newsreaders?
  • How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your work or personal life?
  • How can libraries use RSS or take advantage of this new technology?
I like how I can subscribe to many different things, from library items to local and music items as well.

It makes life easier to put everything in one spot rather than going to multiple websites.

Libraries could create their own RSS feeds and be able to communicate back and forth with upcoming events and what is going on in each library.

Opportunity to learn

I can see where people are apprehensive about learning new technologies, but as an evolving society, it is important to be open minded about things like this.

Thing 2: 7 and 1/2 lifelong learning habbits

Easiest

Habit 4: Have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner.
Habit 7 1/2: Play
I feel comfortable learning new technologies, and having the opportunity to experiment is something that I find fun.

Hardest
Habit 3: View problems as challenges
I sometimes feel like closing down when problems arise, and I need to work on accepting those challenges and attacking them with an open mind.
